This concept originated with German sociologist Max Weber who said that the belief in the importance of hard work and a disapproval of too much leisure time and activities was responsible for the economic success of Europe and the U.S. " Just imagine if those farmers had Facebook and Amazon Prime back then! A new study from Wayne State University backs up Costanza's conclusion that age is a much better predictor of worker attitudes than being a "Millennial" or "Boomer." Lead author Keith Zabel and his team performed an in-depth meta-analysis of 77 work ethic studies published between 1960 and 2015 and found absolutely no empirical difference between the responses of, say, 18- to 22-year-old college students in 1968 and 18- to 22-year-old college students in 2008 regarding the PWE. The real change happens as these young punks get older and more experienced. "In 40 years, this current group of Millennials will think that the younger cohort is lazier and has a lower work ethic," says Zabel. The most important takeaway from this research is that the popular public perception of "lazy Millennials" is not only inaccurate, but also bad for business. If managers are telling the CEO that younger employees don't seem to be engaged and committed to their work, that's definitely a problem. But it's not a "Millennial" problem. "If workers aren't committed or they're not satisfied or they're not sticking around, find out why that is and address it," says Costanza. Costanza equates the Millennial myth with the stereotypes that employers had about women workers half a century ago, that there was no point promoting a woman to a management position because she'd eventually get married, have kids and leave. Or the painful racial and ethnic stereotypes historically faced by minority workers. Consider hydraulic fracking, a relatively new technology that lets us harvest previously inaccessible sources of natural gas by injecting water into shale at high pressures, releasing the natural gas trapped inside. While this practice has dramatically increased reserves and allowed natural gas to remain cheap, it's also helped ensure that further economic growth will be fossil fuel-dependent. Fracking also comes with environmental costs. The process uses enormous amounts of water, much of which is unrecoverable. In our scenario, global economic and population growth have driven demand to the point that technology can no longer keep up. Coal- and oil-fueled power plants shut down, electricity is rationed and a gallon of gasoline costs as much as a car. What are our options? It might be nice to imagine the energy gap could be filled by renewable sources. But solar and wind power, for example, are relatively low-output, high-cost power sources; they couldn't replace fossil fuels as we consume them now. In the event of a catastrophic decrease in fossil fuel supplies, governments would more likely turn to cheap, efficient nuclear energy. The information the CDC circulates is intended to be a snapshot of current flu trends, not specific numbers of people who caught the flu during that flu season or year. The focus is on whether flu outbreaks are occurring, where flu is being reported, when it was reported and which influenza viruses are to blame. While the data released by the CDC provides an accurate picture of flu trends, that data, once it's compiled and analyzed, is also one to two weeks old. It can't tell you whether a new pocket of flu emerged in a specific city over the previous weekend, but it's good for measuring the overall impact of flu on the U.S. For instance, by monitoring which strains of influenza were circulating in the 2014 flu season, CDC epidemiologists were able to tell with data collected between Oct. 1 and Nov. 22 that one of the three chosen strains included in that year's flu shot had mutated, and the vaccine would be less effective that season.|Amazon's vice president of Kindle, Peter Larsen, displays the Amazon Fire TV, which allows users to stream video, music, photos, games and more through their television. Now, when American families hit the couch at 8 p.m., the TV is no longer king. Dad might be watching the big game live on ESPN, but little Becky and Billy are huddled around the iPad, streaming the latest Pixar movie from Netflix. Meanwhile, mom is on her laptop binge-viewing the entire season of her favorite reality show. While some are happy to watch them on laptops, tablets or smartphones, a growing share wants to watch streaming video on their big-screen TVs. But more recently, several technology companies have introduced so-called set-top boxes that make it easier to watch hundreds of streaming video channels directly on your TV via your Internet provider. Apple TV and Roku are the leading set-top boxes, but there's a new player in town that's vying for the increasingly fractured attention of the American TV audience, and its name is Amazon Fire TV. Keep reading to see how Amazon Fire TV works. How it measures up to the competition.

Russia-Ukraine Then enter the pertinent information about the bills that need paying, which account you'd like the money to come out of and whether you'd like to set up automatic payments or take care of matters yourself each month. Typically you're then good to go. Apart from just receiving and paying bills, with online banking you can also accomplish tasks like keeping track of your transactions, setting up money transfers and seeing images of cancelled checks. You can often sign up to receive e-mail alerts that deliver different notifications in the case of low funds or unusual activity. Some Web sites also offer budgeting tools, while others are compatible with financial planning software like Quicken. Be sure you know your bank's policy or a surprise fee could push you into the red. Earn you an additional overdraft fee for your troubles. Also, in regard to online bill paying in particular, it's a good idea to make sure your money gets where it needs to go each month -- even if you've set up recurring payments -- because sometimes a company can change part of its billing information and your bank won't be able to deliver the funds. Whether you opt for SugarSync or Dropbox really depends on what you want from your storage provider. While both apps have their strong points -- Dropbox offers better security, while SugarSync has a better sharing model -- those looking for easy-to-use file storage are probably best suited with Dropbox; tech-savvy users who need some additional features will probably be happier with SugarSync. Whichever one you choose, you'll have the option to access your files wherever you go. Cloud storage means that you're saving your files to a remote database. That way, you can save and retrieve data from any computer or device with web access -- and you don't have to carry a memory stick or external drive. Check out How Cloud Storage Works to learn more. There's a good chance you've gone paperless with your bags at the grocery store, so why not go paperless with your shopping list?|Winston Lord, the U.S. China from 1985-1989, played an important early role in the restoration of diplomatic relations between the United States and China in the early 1970s. As a member of the planning staff of the U.S. National Security Council and special assistant to National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, Lord accompanying the famed statesman on his secret trip to Beijing in 1971 and was he part of the U.S. President Richard Nixon's historic visit to China the following year. Lord, 84, spoke to Rita Cheng of RFA's Mandarin Service on the 50th anniversary of Nixon's Feb. 21-28, 1972 visit to China. RFA: What was your involvement in the reestablishment of Sino-U.S. It began with a secret trip by Kissinger and myself and to others, in July '71, to see whether a presidential trip was possible. We then had another, public, trip. And then we went back to China with the president. I was assigned that responsibility of assembling all the briefing books for President Nixon. Although free port status had been abolished in 1849, Odessa continued to thrive. Its turnover was comparable to that of St. Petersburg, Russia's main port, and banking - and smuggling - flourished. The nouveau riches displayed their wealth by beautifying Odessa: the new Stock Exchange (1889). The Opera House (1887) were intended to surpass their European counterparts in splendour - particularly those in Vienna. Nothing was too good for Odessa: if a touring opera company was invited, it had to be the best that Italy could offer. Many famous artists performed on the stage since 1887, among them P.Tchaikovsky, N.Rimsky-Korsakov, S.Rachmaninoff, P.Sarasate, F.Chaliapin, S. Grushelnitskaya, A.Nezhdanova, L.Sobinov, T.Ruffo, Batistini, Jeraldoni, A.Pavlova, and many others. The Odessa National Academic Theatre of Opera. Ballet is the oldest theatre of the Ukraine. The most recent renovation of the theatre was successfully completed in 2007 with preservation of its neo-baroque style, luxurious hall in rococo style and unique acoustics. In this wealthy city jewellery was very much in vogue and jewellers did a brisk trade.|Surgeons work on transplanting a donated liver. A study found donated kidneys were rejected a median seven times by transplant centers before being accepted. Do factors like race and gender come into play, consciously or unconsciously, when transplant centers are offered donor kidneys? It looks that way, according to the results of a study published in the July 2017 Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN). The research analyzed deceased donor adult kidney offers to patients at the top of wait lists spanning 2007-2012 to see how often the kidneys were accepted or rejected. They then looked at these acceptance rates to discover any discrepancies between groups. In total, 7 million offers were analyzed. Kidneys were offered a median of seven times before finally being accepted for transplantation. So, why all the rejections for such a seemingly in-demand organ? To lay people, the process of matching a donor kidney with a recipient seems pretty cut and dried.

In 1984, the first instance of bioterrorism occurred in the United States. Cult members in rural Oregon sprinkled salmonella on salad bars all around Wasco County, hoping to affect the outcome of a judicial vote. In the end, 750 cases of food poisoning were reported and 45 victims had to be hospitalized. In this article, we'll learn all about bioterrorism -- the biological agents, the terrorists and the measures in place to combat these evildoers. Emergency crews are decontaminated as police in the Australian state of Victoria conduct a chemical, biological, radiological (CBR) hostage exercise at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) lists 39 agents that potentially could be used as biological weapons, including viruses, bacteria and toxins. Before you go out and spend a fortune on gas masks, you should know that many of these aren't as likely to be used because of the nature of the agent.|The quest for high fidelity can be an expensive one -- these AudioQuest K2 speaker cables cost more than U.S. Do you know any audiophiles? Audiophiles are people who demand the highest sound quality possible in their audio playback equipment. Some spend thousands of dollars in their quest for the perfect system. And many don't just focus on equipment or media; some go so far as to design a room's architecture to get the acoustics just right. Audiophiles might describe a sound as bright, dark, warm and dry, among other things. Some use the word ambiance to describe the way a listening environment makes them feel. But they use the word ambience to describe the perception of a space where a recording was made. All of these terms are subjective -- what sounds warm to one person might not sound as good to another. That makes it difficult to define what high quality sound really is. Optimus Prime in biped form, from "The Transformers" movie.See more pictures of robots. Without a doubt, the HowStuffWorks staff is anxious about the upcoming "Transformers" movie. We don't just wonder whether it will be good. We wonder whether we'll see robots with Transformers' capabilities during our lifetimes. While full-scale Transformers seem a little implausible -. Impractical - it turns out that some existing robots have a lot in common with Transformers. In this article, we'll explore what these transforming robots look like, how they work and how they're similar to Transformers like Optimus Prime. We'll begin with an analysis of Prime himself. He's enormous and impressive, but could he ever be real? To find out, we asked engineer Michael D. Belote what it would take to build a full-scale tractor-trailer that can convert into a bipedal robot. In other words, what would it take to make a life-sized version of Optimus Prime? Some self-reconfiguring robots, or robots that can change their shapes to perform different tasks, exist today.|Participants included leading foreign and Kazakh economists, sociologists, political scientists, and culturologists. The concept of social-economic harmony discussed at the 'round table' was first discovered by the academician of the National Academy of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, member of Editorial Board of the Socrates Almanac,Prof. Uraz Baimuratov. During the meeting the scientists talked about the fact that his work was a promising methodological direction in a laborious and long pursuit of development that is balanced and successful in all aspects. Hence, the motto of the meeting can be the following statement: Harmony will save the world! The scientists tried to determine ways to apply the new theoretical states of social-economic harmony. Experts note that the concept allows to better reveal its essence for addressing the challenges of stable development of countries while building bridges between East and West. In his welcome speech to the participants of the 'round table' the president of Europe Business Assembly Prof. J. Netting, in particular, noted: 'Nowadays, in our hard times, when confrontation between the West and the East, Islamic and Christian worlds deepened, it is very important to search for contact points and topics, which unite forward-minded people in the whole world. What we're talking about here is electrotactile stimulation for sensory augmentation or substitution, an area of study that involves using encoded electric current to represent sensory information -- information that a person cannot receive through the traditional channel -- and applying that current to the skin, which sends the information to the brain. The brain then learns to interpret that sensory information as if it were being sent through the traditional channel for such data. In the 1960s and '70s, this process was the subject of ground-breaking research in sensory substitution at the Smith-Kettlewell Institute led by Paul Bach-y-Rita, MD, Professor of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Now it's the basis for Wicab's BrainPort technology (Dr. Bach-y-Rita is also Chief Scientist and Chairman of the Board of Wicab). Eyeglasses are a typical example of sensory augmentation. Braille is a typical example of sensory substitution -- in this case, you're using one sense, touch, to take in information normally intended for another sense, vision.|Applying an image processing algorithm independently to each video frame often leads to temporal inconsistency in the resulting video. To address this issue, we present a novel and general approach for blind video temporal consistency. Our method is only trained on a pair of original. Processed videos directly instead of a large dataset. Unlike most previous methods that enforce temporal consistency with optical flow, we show that temporal consistency can be achieved by training a convolutional neural network on a video with Deep Video Prior (DVP). Moreover, a carefully designed iteratively reweighted training strategy is proposed to address the challenging multimodal inconsistency problem. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on 7 computer vision tasks on videos. Extensive quantitative and perceptual experiments show that our approach obtains superior performance than state-of-the-art methods on blind video temporal consistency. We further extend DVP to video propagation and demonstrate its effectiveness in propagating three different types of information (color, artistic style, and object segmentation).
